Today we’re excited to announce our latest update to expens’d, the simplest way to track your expenses from anywhere.
The biggest news is that expens’d now connects with the just-released TripIt API, so you can track expenses on any element of a trip itinerary. For those of you not using TripIt, it’s an online travel itinerary and trip planner. Check it out, it’s cool. The TripIt connection is the first of many connections we intend to add.
The next biggest thing we’ve added is the Two plan. For $6 a month, two users can share 250 MB of storage. As with all paying plans, expense approval, SSL, and a 30-day trial are included. Thanks to AdamJ who requested this plan be added.
Daniel Schierbeck asked us to add his currency – the Danish Krone – so he could use expens’d. Done! We welcome our Danish users with open arms. It’s great to have you.
Lastly, we have a minor update to the account tab. Moving from a list of links to a tabbed interface will make it easier to navigate between the different account management activities.
Getting Started with the TripIt Connection
So, I’m sure you are wondering just how to get started with tracking expenses on your TripIt travels. Here’s the step-by-step. I’ll try to keep it non-techy
Once you log in to expens’d as the account owner, click on the Account tab. You’ll be greeted by a new tab, “Manage Connections.”

Once there, check the box under “TripIt” and click the Save button. This will allow anyone in your account to link their expens’d account with TripIt.
Now, to establish the link to TripIt, click on the “Connections” link on the main nav.

From the Connections page, you’ll be able to connect with TripIt, and any other connections we add. To allow expens’d to talk with TripIt, select TripIt from the Available Connections section and click “Get Connected.”

This will redirect you to TripIt. If you’re not already logged in, log in. Once logged in, you’ll be asked to grant access to expens’d. Click the “Grant Access” button.

Please note that by granting expens’d access to your TripIt account, you are giving it read-only access. Expens’d won’t be updating TripIt in any way. Also of note is that we don’t store your TripIt email or password, so your information stays secure.
Next you’ll be redirected back to expens’d, where you’ll be greated with a nice little message letting you know that your expens’d account is connected to your TripIt account.
Next time you create a new expense, you’ll have two additional drop-downs. The first is where you select a TripIt trip. Once you choose one, the second drop-down will be automatically filled with all of the items from your itinerary.

That’s it. You’re ready to rock.
What’s Next for Expens’d?
In addition to the Two plan, AdamJ has asked us to add in the ability for him to enter in bills, and be able to track expenses against them. Dan Frederickson asked us to add printable expense reports – both for the web and email. These are what we’ll be working on next. If you have any features you’d like to see added to expens’d let us know, we’re listening.
