Hi Baz,

"Even a “it’s not perfect for everything but for X, Y and Z it’s the best” would probably come across a bit better."

Thanks for the reply. I have been debating about posting things such as you suggest above. I do agree that Rails might not a solution 100% of the time, and neither for that matter is any single technology (let the storm ensue on that comment). I do believe that Rails cannot and should not be pigeon-holed into a certain class of application, so I stay away from stating what Rails can/cannot, or even better should/should not be used for. I keep meeting people who use Rails for all sorts of different things which I have never thought to use Rails for (Chrysler being one).

Thanks again for the post. I didn't take offense. Constructive criticism (i.e. more that "it sucked") is always welcomed. Thanks for your insight. Keep it coming.

Hi,

Sorry - I thought I'd switched commenting back on. I'll play around with the settings again.

I meant no offence; all I meant was that the article comes across as very "pro-Rails" when you are a Rails shop.

If your article was the first thing someone saw they would believe there are no criticisms of Ruby or Rails, when in fact there are (MRI has problems in some core classes, ActiveRecord performance, Rails' focus is too narrow, Rails is too large :-) etc). Even a "it's not perfect for everything but for X, Y and Z it's the best" would probably come across a bit better.

Having said all that, the reason I linked to you is because I work exclusively in Rails and I also believe that for the vast majority of problems that my clients present me with, Rails is the absolute best, cost-effective, solution.

Cheers,

Hi 3hv,

I couldn't create an account on your blog in order to log in and leave a comment there, so I will respond here.

The analysis I provide does not take a stance of whether or not Ruby on Rails is better than another framework, or whether or not it provides a better return on investment than another framework. Aside from the fact that we specialize in Ruby on Rails development, if you can be specific on how the post is biased, it can help me to be more impartial later. Thanks.
